These are some of the local businesses we like to recommend!
Asian Food Centre
(Dotzheimer Str. 30)
Great little grocery store specialising in food from the Indian subcontinent - spices, pulses, tea, frozen goods, poppadoms, chutneys, curry sauces, etc. Try the homemade vegetable samosas usually available on Fridays or Saturdays - they are delicious!
Toko Asia Markt
(Dotzheimer Str.39) NOW SADLY CLOSED
This is a great little Asian supermarket at 39 Dotzheimer Strasse. You can find plenty of store cupboard items for Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian and Indian cooking, as well as fresh produce, including herbs, spices, tofu/beancurd and some asian/exotic vegetables like pak choi, mustard greens and plantains. There are also frozen products and a few household items, such as teapots. Friendly and helpful owners who speak German and English.
Bergkäse Station (Dotzheimer Str. 88)
A great little cheese shop with a nice selection of good-quality cheeses, delicious yoghurts and fresh cream (without added stabilisers - better for making custard or ganache and not so easy to find in Germany!). Opening hours are a bit unusual - Mon-Fri 5-8pm, Fridays 10-8 & Saturdays 10-6, but you always get service with a smile... :)
This small but well-stocked farm shop is just on the edge of Wiesbaden, on the road to Frauenstein. It offers locally-produced meat, vegetables, fruit, eggs and a selection of good-quality manufactured products, including pasta, vinegars, preserves and some dairy produce. Chicken is free-range (deliveries on Thursdays) and pork comes from local producers who ensure their animals are well kept. There are also home-baked breads and cakes. The shop assistants are very friendly and cheerful.
(Klarenthaler Str. 3)
Located just off Dotzheimer Str., this traditional cake shop is straight from another, more refined, era. The lovely old display counter and small, quaint adjoining tea-room don't seem to have changed since the 50s, offering a wonderful antidote to the modern identikit coffee chains that seem to be taking over the world. The cakes are both beautiful and delicious and there is also a lovely selection of hand-made chocolates and traditional marzipan sweets. The ladies who serve you are welcoming and very patient with customers who have difficulty making decisions in the face of such a tempting selection.
Kobu Tee & Futon
(Klarenthaler Str. 4)
This tea shop has a lovely selection of high-quality loose-leaf teas as well as teapots, cups and other tea-related items. They also have a nice range of organic Japanese matcha teas at reasonable prices and the shop-assistants are friendly and knowledgable. If you are looking for a futon bed they will also be able to advise you in-store and show you some of the futons that can be ordered.
(Dotzheimer Str. 14-18)
Nation-wide organic produce store with good quality, albeit pricey products. The store on Dotzheimer Strasse is a good place to stock up on organic flours, oils, baking ingredients, dairy, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables. Staff are friendly and there are regular promotions.
